Robban Ian "Robb" Noble (born 22 January 1975) is an Irish musician best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and principal songwriter of rock band As Above So Below, which he has fronted since its conception in 1994. He is often recognised for his eccentric persona both on and offstage, wide tenor vocal range, and guitar and piano abilities.
Early life
Noble was born in Wicklow, County Wicklow, Ireland to Kelly and Elan Noble, an electrician and housewife, respectively. It was Kelly who sparked Noble's interest in music, having played guitar himself and starting his son on the instrument very early on. His father passed away when Noble was five years old, and he has stated in the past that he retains very few memories of him, though the majority are musical in nature. The remaining years of his childhood were spent moving from house to house as his mother made attempts at what would ultimately be many failed relationships. He attended Holy Rosary Primary School and, later, Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, and followed with a year at Trinity College Dublin in which he opted for ancient and medieval history and culture. This is a decision he has since criticised, often explaining that he chose something based on, "personal interest rather than any realistic application." It was during his year in Dublin that he met Lynn Harper, his future wife, as well as his future bandmates.
As Above So Below
Main article: As Above So Below (band)
As Above So Below's origins can be traced to Trinity College Dublin, where Noble ran the gamut of bands, instruments, and genres, including an alternative rock four-piece called Puritan. After attending a Puritan show, his future As Above So Below bandmates approached Noble with hopes of starting a new band, offering him the position of lead guitarist (the same position he held in Puritan). Initially, Noble turned them down because of his obligations with Puritan; when they disbanded in early 1994, he revisited the idea. His position as vocalist came about entirely by accident, spurred by the impromptu belting of lyrics during a practice session - without his knowledge and before their second session, his bandmades fired the previous vocalist, insisting that Noble take on both roles. This is considered to be the inception of As Above So Below.
Despite their early years being plagued with the search for a balance between radio friendliness and personal contentment in their work as well as legal struggles, the band has gone on to enjoy worldwide critical and public success, blending a vast range of musical styles and genres. They are also known for their energetic, visually stunning live performances, with Noble often saying that their shows are "events, not just concerts." They are consistently able to sell out shows of all sizes, and were the first band to sell out the rebuilt Wembley Stadium in London. To date, they have released seven studio albums, two live albums, and a compilation, as well as four live DVDs. They have also received two Grammy awards: Best Rock Album (
The Resistance, 2011) and Best Rock Album (
Drones, 2016), as well as a plethora of other awards and nominations.

Personal life
Noble is known to have been married to an American woman five years his senior named Lynn Harper from 1994 until 2004; the marriage was made public after court records surfaced documenting Harper suing Noble for matrimonial properties and alimony after their divorce was finalised. The suit was settled out of court. The pair have one daughter together.
It is assumed, based on various sources as well as remarks made offhandedly by Noble, that his relationship with his mother is either poor or nonexistent; in the past, he cited "Muscle Museum" from
Showbiz as being written about his mother, but has since retracted the statement.
Despite his usual penchant for avoiding personal topics in interviews, he has spoken openly on his history of alcoholism, drug abuse, depression, and suicidal ideation (it's widely known that parts of
The 2nd Law's "Explorers" had their beginnings as lines of a suicide note). He collapsed on stage in Atlanta in April of 2004, which may have been a factor in Harper filing for divorce a month later, though his first attempt at rehabilitation would not come until 2009 during the recording of
The Resistance after being found unresponsive by his bandmates. Noble has since said of that time, "I'd lost a really brutal amount of weight, a bit over 18kg at the worst. I'd gotten meself down to just a bit over 8 stone, I think. I was in a bad way, I for sure wanted to die. I wasn't eating at all, so. Adding starving to drinking and drugs f***s with your head." He left the program early and relapsed only a few months later. In 2013, he was admitted to Paracelsus Recovery in Zurich, where he spent eight weeks in treatment for cocaine, amphetamine, and opioid abuse; he also began therapy for lifelong depression and suicidal ideation. Since getting clean and beginning therapy, those closest to Noble have said that it's "like dealing with an entirely new person;" he has made efforts to reach out to those he had particularly bad interactions with while under the influence, and has stated that his relationship with his daughter is better now than it ever was in the past.
Noble has been very famously entangled with English-German actress
Princess Poppy von Schwarzenberg-Mulbright since meeting her in late 2009, and the volatile drug- and alcohol-fueled ups and downs of their relationship were a favourite topic amongst celebrity gossip; all three of Noble's unsavoury run-ins with paparazzi were during outings with Mulbright, and it was not at all uncommon for the two to go from being content in each other's presence to having very public disagreements. The pair were admitted to Paracelsus Recovery together, and although Mulbright has since relapsed, the two are still spotted together often, with Noble continuing to cite her as his closest friend. He is quick to jump to her defence no matter the subject, which occasionally earns him a bit of backlash of his own.
Despite being raised Catholic, Noble is a self-professed
Luciferian and a longtime member of the Assembly of Light Bearers. The band's name, As Above So Below, was chosen due to Noble's initial interest in the occult, and can be explained as such: "'That which is above is the same as that which is below;' Macrocosmos are the same as microcosmos. The universe is the same as God, God is the same as man, man is the same as the cell, the cell is the same as the atom, and so on, ad infinitum."
Noble is a known conspiracy theorist, which becomes apparent when picking through lyrics he's written.
The Resistance and
The 2nd Law explored themes of government oppression and civil uprising and cemented As Above So Below as one of the world's major stadium acts. Their seventh album,
Drones, was a concept album about the dehumanisation of modern warfare and returned to a harder rock sound.
